Data Science Workflow Manager (DSWM)

The standard workflow of a Data Science project

Data Science injects scientific and creative thinking into the industry workflow to generate more valuable insights from the data. The airline industry does not presently have the capability to fully utilize the trove of information it generates to enhance the customer experience, to make operations more efficient, to identify maintenance issues, or to identify other data-driven possible enhancements. Following the latest data science tools and techniques, we can leverage valuable insights from airline data. Nonetheless, the workflow of a data science project is often non-linear, iterative, and cyclical. A typical data science workflow will follow essential stages involving data cleaning, exploration, analysis, then finally presentation and visualization of results.

The objective of this project is to develop a Data Science Workflow Manager (DSWM), that will automate and provide the appropriate support for a Data Science project. DSWM is a collaboration between the grad students and faculty at the AIRLAB and undergraduate students taking the Senior Project course (CIS 4911). Senior Project is a required course for undergraduate students on the Computer Science track, taken during the last semester of their senior year. It is an opportunity for students to cultivate original ideas, advanced designs, and innovative solutions for industry and society problems. Students must solve challenges posed by research faculty and their industrial partners, and at the end of the semester demonstrate their practical solutions. We designed DSWM as a multi-semester project. During this first semester (Spring 2019) this collaborative work will tackle model integration and customized web-based visualization to allow end-users to explore model generated data interactively while using DB1B airlines fare pricing analysis model as the initial test case.

At the Senior Project Showcase, attendees will have the opportunity to see proof-of-concept system demo and interact with talented students who are about to graduate. Discover great talent and learn how our students are solving difficult problems. This interactive event provides opportunities to learn about new system development techniques and to network with FIU faculty, staff, and students along with local industry executives, engineers, and recruiters.
